The Global Seafood Alliance is an international, nonprofit trade association dedicated to advancing responsible seafood practices through education, advocacy and third-party assurances. Through the development of its certification standards, GSA has become the leading provider of assurances for wild and farmed seafood globally. The organization’s work addresses the full spectrum of responsibility, from environmental responsibility and social accountability to food safety.

Gulf United for Lasting Fisheries (G.U.L.F.)

Gulf United for Lasting Fisheries (G.U.L.F.), is the sustainable seafood program of Audubon Nature Institute in New Orleans, LA. Founded in 2012, GULF operates as a local partner to assist the Gulf of Mexico fishing industry to maintain and improve sustainability across the region.

COMEPESCA

COMEPESCA is a national leading seafood industry-based registered nonprofit organization founded in 2003 with the general objective to promote seafood consumption in Mexico. COMEPESCA stands for Consejo Mexicano de Promoción de los Productos Pesqueros y Acuícolas (Mexican Council for the Promotion of Wild and Aquaculture Seafood). We have more than 40 members from the production, harvesting, marketing, and consulting sectors.

Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI)

 

Founded in 2013, the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) is a public-private partnership of 90+ stakeholders tackling seafood sustainability challenges. GSSI is governed by a Steering Board representing the full seafood value chain.

Mission

GSSI’s mission is to ensure confidence in the supply and promotion of certified seafood as well as to promote improvement in the seafood certification schemes.

Seafood Watch Conservation Partners

Seafood Watch was developed by the Monterey Bay Aquarium to research and evaluate wild-caught and farmed seafood. The result is comprehensive seafood sustainability recommendations for the major seafood species consumed in the United States. Seafood Watch defines sustainable seafood as from sources, whether fished or farmed, that can maintain or increase production into the long-term without jeopardizing the structure or function of affected ecosystems.

FisheryProgress FIP Participants

FisheryProgress is the one-stop shop for information on the progress of global fishery improvement projects (FIPs). The platform makes tracking fishery improvement project progress more efficient, consistent, and reliable for businesses supporting or interested in supporting FIPs. A FIP is a multi-stakeholder effort to address environmental challenges in a fishery.

Ocean Wise Partner Programs

Ocean Wise works with restaurant partners across Canada to help identify and source sustainable seafood options. These options are then highlighted on their menus with the Ocean Wise symbol, making it easier for consumers to make environmentally friendly seafood choices. Ocean Wise restaurant partners are committed to continuous improvement with their seafood sourcing.

Companies should set commitments that address environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and seafood traceability. This document will guide a company through the process of generating an environmental commitment then outline the best practices and resources to repeat the process for social responsibility and traceability.

NOAA Fisheries

NOAA Fisheries, also known as National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), is a U.S. federal agency within the Department of Commerce that provides much of the scientific data and monitoring that serves as the basis of most seafood certification and ratings programs for U.S. fisheries. The agency is responsible for the stewardship of national marine resources, conducting stock assessments, and research on fish biology and ecosystems.
