Communications Manager

This position focuses on building FishChoice’s visibility and brand to our audiences in the seafood sector, including seafood companies across the supply chain, non-profit organizations and donors. We are looking for someone with 3-5 years of communications experience and who is a motivated, organized, self-starter. Applicants should have an entrepreneurial spirit and sense of humor - and be flexible and open to evolving responsibilities. 

The Communications Manager will be responsible for these activities:

  • Strategic/communications planning 
    • Provide input and support on the FishChoice annual strategic & communications planning process (we do these two things in collaboration with external consultants 
    • Track progress against the communications elements of FishChoice plans on a quarterly basis 
    • Support periodic brand/messaging refreshes when needed, in collaboration with external consultants 
    • Lead development of launch and other focused communications planning 
  • Communications materials and outreach
    • Maintain current copies of the organization's brand, messages, one-pagers, etc., and develop new materials as needed
    • Work with graphic designer to produce physical and digital assets
    • Develop external communications materials as needed (such as FishChoice.com and FisheryProgress website content, trainings, presentations, surveys, etc.)
    • As appropriate, conduct direct outreach to key audiences on behalf of FishChoice
    • Research conferences, events, and potential speaking opportunities for the FishChoice team
    • Develop a storybank of case studies that describe and visually represent project success for fundraising and other purposes 
  • Digital communications
    • Implement digital communications plan and update annually 
    • Newsletters & other mailings
    • Maintain the editorial calendar for the newsletters, working with the FishChoice.com and FisheryProgress teams to plan content
    • Work with graphic designer to develop visual content for newsletters 
    • Lead the preparation and sending  of newsletters, track open-rates, and manage recipient lists in MailChimp
    • Lead on setting up/send off as well as content development for periodic one-off mailings sent through MailChimp for both FishChoice.com and FisheryProgress
    • Social Media - coordinate FishChoice’s social media channels, including drafting content, engaging with followers, helping develop graphics, and tracking analytics.
  • Media relations
    • Maintain FishChoice’s media list
    • Build and maintain relationships with media contacts 
    • Track media coverage of FishChoice and FisheryProgress and update press sections of the sites, respond when useful
    • Prepare and pitch FishChoice press releases (with support from external consultants as needed) and develop quotes for partners’ press releases

Expertise:

  • A combination of relevant work experience and education to successfully perform the core responsibilities of the position
  • High level of organization skills 
  • Experience working in the seafood or environmental space 
  • Experience coordinating processes with teams, i.e. populating the editorial calendars and gathering newsletter content.
  • Experience conducting analytical research, such as materials reviews, media scans, and competitive analyses to glean insights that inform smart strategies
  • Technical writing and ability to write clearly so it's understandable to lay audiences
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and ability to work well and independently on a partially virtual team
  • Comfort/experience working with web-based platforms
  • Ability to laugh with a bunch of silly people

Program Coordinator

This position focuses on supporting both FishChoice.com and FisheryProgress.org teams. We are looking for someone that would consider organization one of their superpowers, and enjoys moving between different types of tasks, from outreach to administration to working with websites. Applicants should be quick-learners, have an entrepreneurial spirit and sense of humor - and be flexible and open to evolving responsibilities.

Program Management & Support:

  • Manage outreach & follow up for current FishChoice.com businesses and support the recruitment of new potential business members on FishChoice, including restaurants, seafood companies, and zoos and aquariums.
  • Help identify and build and maintain relationships with FishChoice’s NGO partners.
  • Manage all reporting schedules for Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs) that list data on the FisheryProgress website. 
  • Organize and support webinars and trainings for FishChoice.com and FisheryProgress users.
  • Make content updates and edits for FishChoice.com and FisheryProgress, and test technology fixes and updates as needed for both websites. 
  • Editorial reviews for FIPs on FisheryProgress
  • Work across FisheryProgress & FishChoice.com to ensure that shared information (ie FIP participants and new FIP sources) is kept up to date.
  • Support teams in identifying new tools, resources or opportunities that could improve both platforms.
    Help support grant reporting and tracking metrics

Administrative:

  • Lead logistics /scheduling for meetings, note-taking and distribution to attendees for both FisheryProgress & FishChoice.com.
  • Manage general email accounts for FisheryProgress & FishChoice.com – field incoming requests and questions 
  • Support development and review of communications items (i.e. mailings, newsletters)
  • Provide program support as needed

Skills:

  • A combination of relevant work experience and education to successfully perform the core responsibilities of the position
  • Superior time management and organizational skills 
  • Able to move between tasks and manage time effectively
  • Detail-oriented and efficient
  • Experience working in the seafood or environmental space 
  • Relationship-builder who looks for connections, builds trust, brings credibility, and nurtures and deepens relationships.  
  • Experience using Salesforce to manage client relationships is a plus  
  • Experience using Drupal or other web platforms to audit or create content is a plus
  • Clear, concise communication and diligent proofreading.
  • Diligent and collaborative
