✕In the early 1980’s Ron Caudle left his hometown of Halifax, Nova Scotia and headed west to Kitchener-Waterloo to begin a career in retail management. At the time, he had no way of knowing how much his Maritime roots would affect his life’s work. “Every time I’d go back to Halifax for a visit, people from K-W would ask me to bring back lobster and salmon. There wasn’t much available here in the early ‘80’s,” says Ron. Sensing a business opportunity, Ron and his wife Sylvia opened their first Caudle’s Catch Seafood retail store – a modest 500 square foot location on Kingsbury Drive, Kitchener – on April 4, 1986.
“As more people started recognizing the health benefits of seafood and adding it to their diet, there was a greater demand for it. That’s basically how our business grew,” states Sylvia. Caudle’s Catch Seafood imports product from around the world, including the United States, South and Central America, the Caribbean, Europe, New Zealand, and of course Canada.
The east coast of Canada remains the most popular place for Caudle’s Catch to import products from, with favourites such as Atlantic salmon, cod, haddock, oysters, mussels and lobster. From the Great Lakes, Caudle’s brings in pickerel, lake trout, and white fish fillets. As a wholesaler, Caudle’s Catch Seafood distributes over 20,000 pounds of fresh and frozen seafood to stores and restaurants across Canada each week from their 14,000 square foot facility on Otonabee Drive in Kitchener.
In addition, they recently expanded their retail operations to meet the demand of a growing and loyal customer base. Through their 3,000 square foot seafood superstore, and locations inside Vincenzo’s in Waterloo, plus the St. Jacobs and Kitchener Markets, Caudle’s Catch Seafood can deliver a broader range of products directly to their customers, at the best price.
“We have the largest and what I believe is the finest selection of fresh and frozen seafood in Southwestern Ontario,” adds Ron. “You’ll find a wide range of products including ready-made, heat ‘n serve, live lobster, specialty seafood trays, a gourmet selection of condiments, sauces and marinades, and even sushi.”
From a humble two-person business, Caudle’s Catch Seafood has grown to offer Canada-wide wholesale operations, and four retail locations with over 30 employees, including Ron and Sylvia’s three children. They plan to spend the next 25 years as they’ve spent the last... fishing the waters of the world, to offer you the finest seafood for any occasion.
