Western Seafood Company, a vertically integrated shrimp processing company based in Freeport, Texas, has partnered with the Ocean Conservancy and the Sustainable Fisheries partnership to introduce more environmentally fishing technology to the Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery. As a reward for its efforts, principals in the company and its fishermen received the 2008 Stewardship and Sustainability Award from the National Marine Fisheries for their leadership in the development and assessment of effective, efficient equipment to reduce the incidental catch and mortality of sea turtles and sharply reduce fuel use in the Gulf and South Atlantic shrimp industry.
