Kvarøy Arctic
✕Kvarøy (say “Kwa-ray”) is postcard pretty; an island on the Norwegian Inner Passage; two square miles of rustic landscape with fir trees and heather, dirt roads, farm plots, and rugged outcroppings. The view inland presents mountains crested with snow. Towards the fjords, one sees pristine blue-green waters that belong to the people of Norway. That said, few see it other than the locals and ambitious nature-seekers – it takes a full eight hours to reach Kvarøy from Oslo airport by train, taxi, and two boats. The population of Kvarøy is roughly 85. Some people leave, others are born. And some come here to join a close-knit community that shares a worker’s lifestyle and a grand vision: to evolve open water salmon farming into a sustainable practice that protects the environment and promotes animal welfare while providing a healthy source of protein for a growing world. And they’re doing it.
