Located on Hawaii’s Big Island on the Kona Coast, Big Island Abalone Corporation (BIAC) produces 100 tons of live Kona Abalone – a premium stock of ezo (Japanese northern) abalone – every year. 

Operating on a 10-acre aquafarm, BIAC is one the largest abalone producers in the world. Hawaii has proved to be the ideal location for growing Kona Abalone. Hawaii receives more sunlight per year than any other coastal location in the USA – sunlight critical to growing abalone’s food, red algae. BIAC also has access to a constant supply of cold, nutrient-rich seawater that is pumped from a depth of 3000 feet into the facility. This system is so powerful that it can allow for 27,000 gallons of fresh seawater to be delivered into the facility per minute. Within their 10-acre site, BIAC’s facilities include an abalone hatchery, nursery, and grow-out tanks that generally house five million abalone alone. 

For over 15 years, BIAC has researched and developed ways to simulate the positive elements of the natural ocean environment and has innovated farm-feeding practices. BIAC works to control the quality of their Kona Abalone from the very start of the growth cycle. Kona Abalone are fed a blend of BIAC’s patented algae that optimizes the taste, texture, color, nutrition, and shell characteristics of the abalone. Combined with their facilities ideal location, these conditions have led to a flourishing abalone farm. 

Being midway between Asia and North America, BIAC can ship fresh, live Kona Abalone to both continents. This has allowed their abalone to be praised by chefs and served at restaurants in Tokyo, Waikiki, Las Vegas, and San Francisco.
