About the Organization

What is FishChoice?

FishChoice, Inc. (FCI) is a registered 501(c)(3) environmental nonprofit founded in 2008 that is dedicated to helping businesses advance their seafood sustainability efforts on their own. FishChoice creates tools and provides resources that make it easier for businesses to buy and sell sustainable seafood. By collaborating with both the leading sustainable seafood programs and leaders in the seafood industry, FishChoice advances sustainability in the global seafood industry. FishChoice.com is the flagship platform developed by FCI that offers businesses several tools to advance their sustainable seafood sourcing, tracking, education, engagement, and more.

Why is FishChoice important?

Several studies have shown consumer preferences for sustainable seafood. Consumers want to make more sustainable choices and chefs and retailers want to provide them. FishChoice helps businesses address this consumer need by aggregating and curating sustainable seafood information, ratings, and certifications into a single platform and simplifying the sustainable seafood landscape with businesses in mind.

How does it work?

FishChoice works with the leading global sustainable seafood assessments to align sustainable seafood sourcing information into one set of data that can be used for suppliers to identify and promote the sustainability of their seafood in a transparent effort, enable businesses to track the sustainability of their seafood and keep it up-to-date, and more. For buyers and suppliers trying to connect, FishChoice is not an e-commerce website, but rather works under a membership process as an online network, similar to a dating website.

How much does FishChoice cost?

FishChoice.com is currently free of charge, but businesses can make a tax deductible contribution.

How is FishChoice funded?

FishChoice.com is a nonprofit organization that is currently funded by private foundations and individual donors who recognize the importance of ensuring sustainable supplies of seafood for future generations. In the future, FishChoice plans to explore subscription &/or sponsorship fees.

Who founded FishChoice?

Richard Boot is the Founder and President of FishChoice.com. Prior to founding Fishchoice.com in 2008, Richard worked as Director of Operations for FishWise (Sustainable Fishery Advocates). At FishWise he developed training and implementation programs for use in grocery stores' meat and seafood departments. Richard has formed collaborations with national environmental NGOs on a variety of subjects including mercury labeling and education about and sourcing of environmentally preferable seafood products.

Can consumers use the site?

Anyone can register to see what types of products are listed. However, the site provides listings geared to the needs of commercial seafood buyers. There is a consumer page on the website and there are plans to add additional resources for consumers.

Why do I need a membership

In order to use all aspects of FishChoice, a simple membership is required. The membership allows access to all content, receipt of our e-newsletter, and  ensures the most successful means in contacting suppliers using the website.

How do I change information or my password?

To change your email, display name, or password, please click the "My FishChoice" link in the upper right hand corner of the website and

What types of suppliers will you find on FishChoice?

Currently FishChoice lists any business that sells seafod to another business such as farms, fishers, primary processors, importers, distributors, and manufacturers and the companies can provide the necessary sourcing details to identify the sustainability of their products.

How can suppliers get a product on FishChoice?

Producers can submit their products by filling out an online form or calling the organization. FishChoice will need to know the scientific name of the species, where it was caught or farmed, and the method by which it was caught or farmed to establish the basis of whether a product has the necessary sustainability credentials. For products that get listed on the website FishChoice will add details such as fresh &/or frozen product forms, seasonal availability, minimum order size, delivery information, full sales contact information, and additional notes about the company.
